Another treat, run by a very friendly, rather overworked Englishman. Start with the sangria and it won't matter what you order cos it'll taste sensational. The bonus? It actually will taste sensational!

Cost: snacks and sangrai $14, dinner for two $22

    Bocasalfonsoarrival

Spent the morning dolphin watching and diving in Bocas del Toro, stopping off here for lunch. The food is nothing to write home about, various pescado or camarones options, all in the same orange sauce, but what a view! Jumped in and snorkelled straight after lunch, and the extra weight helped me swim through huge schools of sardine and watch hundreds of bigger fish jostle for the scraps from above.

    Bocasialfonso

Lunch for two (one plate plus vegetarian option) $16

The food here was really good, Euro-cuisine at Euro-prices: Delizioso!

Authentic pasta, perfect starters, imported beers and Italian wines.

Beautiful Bocas del Toro has fine dining by the sea, or backstreet cantinas. We're mixing it up...

    Bocaschitre

Chitre by name, Chitre by reputation, this was seriously good Chitre: meatballs, noodles, rice, salsa. Washed down with Coke. Carb-attack!

    Lunch for two $5 (£3.45)

After four days in the Corcovado National Park, eating the food we carried in on our backs (mostly tinned tuna and Snickers), I cannot begin to describe the massive gap that this tasty nosh filled in my stomach. PJ will never feature highly in Egon Ronay or Michelin guides, but I have only very rarely enjoyed a feed more. Food. You don't know what you miss till it's gone...

A goddamn tasty ale at the end of a hard day travelling down from Mexico City, then spending three hours shopping for trekking gear in the Mercado Central...

What's not to like? This place is open 24 hours, sells one product, accompanied by hot chocolate or milk. It never closes and is always busy. Such a brilliantly simple business model it's hard to see why Churreria el Moro isn't on as many street corners as McDonalds! Late night comfort food at its absolute finest.

    Cost: churros y leche, 25 pesos (£1.35, AU$2.25, US$2)

This place promised so much, a huge beer hall packed to the rafters with footie fans watching the big game at the Azteca. It's owned by Corona so obviously the cerveza delivered. But the food was AWFUL. Not somewhere to recommend. Good Mariachi band mind you
